The Earth’s inner core is a heated, 1,500-mile-wide ball of metal that remains largely unknown. It is thousands of miles from the planet’s surface, making it incredibly difficult to examine. As a result, scientists have resorted to seismic waves to discover more about the inner core’s enigmatic nature.

Based on seismic wave data, researchers first proposed the idea of an extra layer inside the Earth’s core in 2002. They did, however, have extremely limited data at the time. They needed sensors on the opposite side of the planet from the earthquake, typically in the middle of the ocean, to detect seismic waves from the Earth’s core.

Researchers can now see the reflections of waves that bounced from the other side of the Earth and rebounded back toward the earthquake’s epicenter because additional seismic sensors have been deployed in recent years. They were able to detect the feeble signals of these rebounding waves, some of which traveled through the inner core as many as five times, by combining the power of many sensors.

The observed change in the speed of these waves indicated that there was something different about the texture or structure of the innermost orb. The researchers believe that the two suggested layers of the Earth’s inner core are similar in that they are both made of an iron-nickel alloy but have different crystal shapes. It appears that the shift between the inner and innermost cores is slow.

Dan Frost, a seismologist at the University of South Carolina who did not contribute to the study, noted that the reported results may not represent proof of an unique transition, but rather an unneeded splitting into numerous layers. Yet, the discoveries of the study could help explain how the Earth’s magnetic field, which shields humanity and other life from cosmic radiation, arose.
